Normally .. i never speak well of DarkForge as we have VERY different political views .. However, even considering my loyalty to Bluehost for over 6 years .. I couldn't pass up a service granted by DarkForge Hosting with their SVN plugin.
In a nutshell , SVN allows multiple person to Edit/Share files across a network of people without one person overwriting another persons work. Some of the projects i work on have many developers ... its damn near irritating and impossible to keep track of edits from person to person ... SVN does that for you with a shit load of perks.
DarkForge Hosting offers SVN WITH their hosting plans! Normally SVN runs about 5-6 bucks a month for the single repositories, and limited bandwidth. DFGs its  a standard package with the a web-hosting plan, which is actually unheard of!
So you figure, web-hosting at about 5-6 bucks a month, and SVN host for another 5-6 and your looking at 10-12 bucks a month plus tax... DFG literally cuts that cost in half. Even with my  loyalty to BlueHost, there was no way i could beat the SAME webhost service AND get aditional perks like SVN with Bluehost..matter of fact, at the Time of this post, BlueHost refused to even add the service, let along match it.
Now .. getting to the Perks of what SVN is...
Think of it like a group of files you want to share with your fellow Programers, coders, and or designers... Operating an SVN host along with an SVN client, and you NEVER have to touch an FTP client, or have to worry about tracking the lazy jerk down for not uploading his latest edits. SVN literally does it for you and your co-workers.
2 clicks, and Everyone with access has the latest edited edition of your files.
SVN isn't limited to language files... Currently im using one repository for designs. So for you Themers out there that are split into Designers/ slicers/ and coders ...it keeps things VERY simple to share the work load.
Private Access is probably the BEST function with SVN ... you can literally stipulate who/what group can access set files/folders .... so if your like me, and keep several projects going at once, and really only want developers to access ONLY the files they are supposed to be dealing with ... it does THAT for you as well in a few clicks.
Ill be posting back soon, with some screenshots and examples of usages with DarkForge Hostings SVN service. |
